Tomas Holmstrom has spent much of his NHL career planted in front of the opponent’s goalie deflecting shots into the net. He was there again Saturday night, beating goalie Ilya Bryzgalov off deflections of Nicklas Lidstrom’s shots for his 14th and 15th goals in the Detroit Red Wings’ 4-1 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes.

When we see Boston vs Philly in this year’s Winter Classic tomorrow, it’s going to be an interesting time. Hopefully it will be possible for a good game for everyone to see. In New York, it’s supposed to be slushy and cool for New Years, but Boston will be a little cooler, so we can watch these players rushing around.

It’s hard to imagine Steve Yzerman as anything but a gap-toothed captain of the Detroit Red Wings hefting the Stanley Cup. It is the enduring image of his remarkable, Hall of Fame career. It came close to not happening.
